Matthew Morpheus
Matthew Morpheus (Serhii Matveichenko) is a Ukrainian conceptual artist and author whose multidisciplinary practice spans digital collage, painting, installation, and literature. Drawing on a nomadic, multicultural background across Ukraine, Israel, Germany, and the UK, Morpheus interrogates the intersections of identity, displacement, conscious perception, and contemporary symbolism.
His visual language utilizes fragmented imagery and layered, non-linear narratives to construct spaces where the viewer's personal interpretation completes the artwork. Parallel to his visual practice, Morpheus is the author of several philosophical and literary texts, including Zero Emotion, Elysium, and Philosophy of the 21st Century: On the Other Side of Truth.
Artist statement
I hear the echo of protests, I see the reflections of revolutions. And every pixel in the collage is the shadow of a digital city. My collages are a path that leads to new freedoms. Every line on the canvas is a struggle; this is a sound, this is an era of change. I seek inspiration in the mundane and the extraordinary, in fleeting moments and eternal truths. The interplay of chaos and order, the tension between freedom and constraint – these paradoxes ignite my creativity. And perhaps, most profoundly, it is the human spirit – resilient, fragile and infinitely complex – that fuels my artistic fire. Matthew Morpheus is not merely my name; it is my manifesto. I morph reality, distilling it into fragments that resonate with the viewer’s own memories. My art works are bridges between past and present, between nostalgia and possibility.
